Air Cargo Insurance from China to Pakistan

Cargo survey professional photographing package condition while a Pakistani importer records damage evidence

Direct answer: Air cargo insurance from China to Pakistan is separate from the freight booking; cargo is not automatically insured for its full commercial value. Carrier liability, a seller’s contractual risk, a forwarder’s responsibility, and cargo-insurance coverage are different. Before shipment, obtain the actual policy or certificate, identify the insured party and voyage, confirm the insured value, deductible, exclusions, start/end points, and claim-notification rules.

Mohsin Air Cargo is not presented as an insurer and does not claim that its freight rate automatically includes full-value insurance. Ask in writing whether insurance is available for your exact shipment and who the authorised insurer, broker, policyholder, and beneficiary will be.

Carrier liability versus air cargo insurance

Protection What it is Important limitation
Air-carrier liability Legal liability that may arise under an applicable convention, law, or air waybill Liability must be established and may be limited by weight, defences, jurisdiction, and conditions
Forwarder liability Responsibility under the forwarder’s role, contract, and applicable law The forwarder may act as agent, contractual carrier, or in another role; terms matter
Cargo insurance A contract under which an insurer covers specified risks for an insured interest Coverage, exclusions, deductible, valuation, territory, duration, and claims procedure are policy-specific
Supplier warranty or purchase protection Rights concerning product conformity or seller performance Usually does not replace transit insurance or prove carrier responsibility

Receiving compensation from one source may affect recovery from another and can involve subrogation. Do not assume you can collect the full loss several times.

What is the Montreal Convention cargo limit?

For international carriage governed by the Montreal Convention 1999, the cargo liability limit was revised to 26 Special Drawing Rights (SDR) per kilogram, effective 28 December 2024. SDR is an International Monetary Fund reserve asset, not a fixed dollar or rupee amount; its value changes.

This does not mean every damaged shipment automatically receives 26 SDR per kilogram. The Convention’s applicability, carrier responsibility, package or shipment weight, evidence, declared-value arrangements, air waybill, contractual terms, and legal circumstances matter. A special declaration of interest at delivery and any required supplementary payment can also affect the applicable limit under the Convention.

Do not use Mohsin Air Cargo’s freight-rate range as an insurance or liability figure. The indicative service range of PKR 2,750–20,000 per kg is pricing information only.

Does DDP include cargo insurance?

Not automatically. DDP is an Incoterm used in the seller-buyer contract to allocate delivery obligations, costs, and risk. Unlike certain other Incoterms that include an express insurance obligation, DDP itself should not be read as proof that full-value cargo insurance exists.

Ask the seller and freight provider separately:

  • Who bears risk at each stage under the sales contract?
  • Has an insurance policy actually been issued?
  • Who is named as insured or loss payee?
  • Does the policy cover warehouse receipt, domestic China transport, air movement, customs storage, and final delivery?
  • What document proves coverage for this shipment?

Questions to ask before buying cargo insurance

  1. Who is the regulated insurer? Obtain the legal name, policy or certificate reference, and contact route for verification.
  2. Who is insured? Confirm that the party with the financial interest can claim or is appropriately named.
  3. What voyage is covered? Identify origin, destination, intermediate storage, domestic legs, and the moment cover begins and ends.
  4. Which goods are described? Product, quantity, value, packaging, condition, batteries, temperature needs, and other risks must be accurate.
  5. What is the insured value? Determine whether it is invoice value, cost plus freight, replacement cost, or another agreed basis.
  6. Which risks are covered? “All risks” is not the same as every possible loss.
  7. What is excluded? Read exclusions, warranties, conditions, and clauses—not only the sales summary.
  8. What deductible applies? A claim below the deductible may produce no payment.
  9. What evidence and deadlines apply? Know notification, survey, documentation, mitigation, and formal-claim requirements before shipment.
  10. How are partial loss and salvage handled? Understand repair, depreciation, salvage, and disposal rules.

What can cargo insurance cover?

Coverage depends entirely on the policy wording. A policy may cover specified accidental physical loss or damage during the insured transit, subject to its clauses and exclusions. Possible insured events can include theft, fire, collision, impact, water damage, or handling damage—but no event should be assumed covered without reading the policy.

Common areas that may be excluded, restricted, or require special agreement include:

  • Inadequate or unsuitable packing
  • Ordinary leakage, loss in weight, wear, or gradual deterioration
  • Inherent vice or product defect
  • Delay or loss of market without physical damage
  • Wilful misconduct, fraud, misdeclaration, or illegal goods
  • Sanctions, war, strikes, civil disturbance, cyber events, or political risks
  • Temperature variation without suitable cover and records
  • Used, fragile, high-value, perishable, battery, or other specially classified goods
  • Unexplained shortage from sealed packages
  • Loss outside the insured geographic or time period

“Warehouse to warehouse” does not mean unlimited storage at every location. Policy duration, ordinary course of transit, interruption, delay, and final-delivery clauses matter.

How should insured value be calculated?

Use the valuation basis permitted by the actual policy. Depending on the agreement, the insured value may include product invoice value, freight, and a stated uplift—but you cannot invent or inflate value after a loss.

Prepare evidence before shipment:

  • Supplier invoice and proof of payment
  • Purchase contract and product specifications
  • Packing list and carton/serial records
  • Freight quotation and charges
  • Inspection report and pre-shipment photographs where appropriate
  • Policy, certificate, endorsements, and applicable clauses
  • Any declared-value or special-interest documentation

Underinsurance, policy limits, deductibles, depreciation, salvage, and contribution can reduce a settlement. Full invoice value should never be promised without a specific policy analysis.

When should insurance be arranged?

Arrange cover before the insured risk begins. A policy generally cannot be purchased after known loss or damage and treated as if it existed earlier. Confirm the attachment point before the supplier dispatches the goods, especially when you need domestic China collection or pre-flight storage covered.

If several suppliers are being consolidated, ask whether cover attaches to each domestic consignment, only after arrival at the coordinated facility, or only when the international shipment is declared. Do not assume one certificate automatically covers unreported supplier parcels.

What to do when cargo appears damaged

Follow the policy, air waybill, delivery terms, and legal advice applicable to the claim. As a general evidence-preservation process:

  1. Record the condition before acceptance or opening. Photograph the full package, all sides, seals, labels, marks, and visible damage.
  2. Note exceptions on the delivery record. Avoid signing an unqualified clean receipt when damage or shortage is visible.
  3. Notify the relevant parties immediately. Contact Mohsin Air Cargo, the carrier or delivery party, and the insurer/broker using their required channels.
  4. Protect the goods from further loss. Take reasonable mitigation steps without destroying evidence.
  5. Preserve packaging and contents. Do not discard cartons, seals, cushioning, damaged units, or salvage unless authorised.
  6. Arrange a survey if required. Follow insurer instructions before repair, disposal, or destructive testing.
  7. Reconcile the shortage or damage. Match purchase order, packing list, carton count, serial numbers, received units, and affected value.
  8. Submit the formal claim on time. Use the policy and legal deadlines; an informal WhatsApp message may not satisfy formal notice.

Convention, policy, air-waybill, and contract notice periods can be short. Report immediately rather than relying on the maximum possible legal deadline.

Documents commonly requested for a claim

  • Written claim statement and quantified loss
  • Insurance policy or certificate and endorsements
  • Air waybill or transport document
  • Commercial invoice, proof of payment, and packing list
  • Delivery receipt with damage or shortage notation
  • Pre-shipment and arrival photographs or video
  • Survey, damage, repair, replacement, or disposal report
  • Correspondence with supplier, forwarder, carrier, and delivery party
  • Police, fire, customs, or authority report when relevant
  • Proof of mitigation and salvage value

The insurer may request other evidence. Keep originals and a time-stamped digital claim file.

Packaging and insurance

Insurance does not make weak packaging acceptable. The supplier should pack for the foreseeable handling, stacking, vibration, pressure, moisture, and delivery conditions of the route. Product-specific packaging may be needed for electronics, batteries, glass, machinery, liquids, textiles, or temperature-sensitive goods.

Record the final package before release. If the forwarder recommends correction and the shipper refuses, that decision can affect acceptance, liability, and insurance. See our air-cargo packaging guide.

How freight price and insurance interact

Mohsin Air Cargo’s indicative China-to-Pakistan freight range is PKR 2,750–20,000 per kg. Freight cost is not an insurance premium, insured value, deductible, or liability cap. Insurance—if available—must be quoted separately or expressly identified in the written commercial scope.

Mohsin Air Cargo normally targets 7–14 days for eligible cargo after it and the required information are ready. Delay does not automatically create an insured claim, and insurance does not guarantee the delivery target.

Frequently asked questions

Is my cargo fully insured because I paid a DDP rate?

No. Request the policy or certificate, insurer identity, insured party, value, route, period, deductible, and clauses. DDP alone is not evidence of full-value insurance.

Does 26 SDR per kilogram guarantee compensation?

No. It is a Montreal Convention liability limit for covered international carriage, not an automatic insurance payment. Applicability, liability, evidence, declared interest, legal defences, and other circumstances matter.

Can I insure goods after damage is discovered?

Known loss cannot normally be retrospectively insured as if the policy existed before it occurred. Arrange and verify coverage before the risk begins.

Should I discard a damaged carton after taking photos?

No, not unless the insurer or responsible party authorises it or immediate safety requires action. Preserve packaging, seals, goods, and salvage because they may be needed for survey and causation evidence.

Does Mohsin Air Cargo provide insurance?

Insurance availability must be confirmed for the exact shipment. This article does not claim that Mohsin Air Cargo is an insurer, that every shipment is insured, or that any specific premium or coverage is guaranteed.
